About the project

The Summer Garden on Gorky Street was founded in 2016, and opened its doors to citizens in September 2019. We created it as a private initiative in memory of that large green garden that was here once — before the reconstruction of the street — and it is still in minds of many citizens.

The idea of this project is to show how original and amazing the nature of the Urals is, and how important it is to make every effort to preserve its pristine beauty.

For this, in the very center of the metropolis, close to the natural conditions of the Ural forest we created, a rocky relief, a waterfall and a small pond. Here, in the Urals, on the border of Europe and Asia, cultures of different climatic zones converge.

This unique biodiversity has been lovingly and carefully recreated on a small piece of embankment.

Now in the Summer Garden there are more than 300 species of plants — most of them were brought from Russian and European nurseries, some plants were donated by residents of neighboring quarters, some appeared in the garden themselves. Here willows, maples, pines and ornamental apple trees coexist.

Many flowering shrubs adorn the garden from early spring to late autumn. Among them are mock orange, the flowers of which smell of strawberries, spirea, physocarpus and cinquefoil. There is a large area with rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas.

There are many species of aquatic plants, most of which are endemic to the Ural rivers and lakes.

As for perennials visitors will be able to enjoy the blooming of various varieties of geraniums, astrantia, veronica, burnet, irises and gravilata. Peonies, thyme and dioecious atenaria decorate the descent to the river, and in shady places you can find wild strawberries and primrose.

Lilacs of the same varieties that have grown here for many years and have remained a cloud of flowering trees in the paintings of famous Sverdlovsk artists remind of the old garden on this place.

The main principle of the garden is biological and ecological balance. Each plant has its own comfortable place where it can grow without complicated care in the Ural climate. Among the flowers, shrubs and trees, dragonflies and bees have settled, and a family of toads has been living in the pond for several years. In the spring, ducks and blackbirds come here to breed. Everyone who steps here will have a rest from the industrial environment and the eclecticism of urban architecture, a meeting with the Ural nature — strong and fragile at the same time. The Summer Garden is open to visitors from April to October. In winter, the garden rests and gains strength before a new flowering season. During its existence, it has become one of the favourite places to have a walk, and we are grateful to everyone who treats all its inhabitants with care. This nature is close to our hearts. It is very important to preserve it for those who will live after us.
